Four hundred years is a long time to be silent. Knowing what took place during that time helps you bridge the gap between the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Any time we study a book of the Bible, it’s always important to know what went on during that time for better understanding.

My understanding of this period is crucial to my understanding and interpretation of the New Testament. I have to know the context of the situation the people were living through and the events that were taking place to understand the events of the New Testament better.

It’s important to understand what was taking place socially, politically and religiously from when the OT was completed and the NT began. By understanding the historical context of those years, I think it will give me a better understanding of the cultural mindset just prior to Jesus’ arrival.

Understanding the intertestamental period is crucial for grasping the context in which the New Testament events unfold. This period, spanning roughly 400 years between the Old and New Testaments, saw significant developments in Judaism, Hellenistic culture, politics, and religious thought. Understanding the cultures, influences and history of this time will provide context to help me study the new testament.

For me, knowing the historical background is what would help the most. It helps put things into perspective.

Theology is one of the 4 types of questions that interested me the most. I believe it’s because I tend to think what lessons could be learned from what I’m reading.

I believe the contemporary application stands out to me the most because I am always curious as to how this document, as old as it is, applies to the present time. I think that learning how it is applicable today guides my understanding of present events and situations greatly.

I believe understanding the context of scripture is most helpful as the first step in applying it to our current culture and lives. If we do not answer the question of how these words would have been perceived by their original audience, we can get off track quickly.

It is important to understand what the scriptures meant to the original audience (since it was most relevant to their time in history and their culture. The question that stood out to me was how does scripture apply to our 21st century world? How does such an old document apply to our lives today?

I will be looking for those episodes in scripture which still parallel the events of our lives today.
