A lot of other disciplinary issues we try to solve in class with seating changes, re-teaching the expectations, having classwide discussions, or direct teaching on why we don’t say x, y, and z. I try to move on and not hold it against students who act out, and we begin with a clean slate each day.

It’s a teachable moment, when the offending student is asked to consider how the other person feels and question whether the joke was really funny or just hurtful. It seems to be effective if handled correctly.

If a student has a minor infraction, they are given time to reflect, and decide how to respond better next time. Our middle school has a demerit system. If the student is given two demerits in a single day, they will be given an after-school detention, with a call home to their parents. Greater discipline issues will immediately involve the principal and may include suspension.
