When trying out something new in class and anyone that is not getting the concept and he or she is frustrated, I encourage that student to be patient to try it again.

I’d like to post the fruits up onto the wall!

I often tell my students, “Kind words or no words at all.” Kindness is a fruit of the spirit. I also do my best to teach kindness through literature, when we read novels about bullying an immigrant or a student who is considered “different” in style or behavior. I believe that students need to learn and practice self-control, which I can imbed through behavior expectations.

I want to focus more on consciously implementing the fruit of the Spirit in my classroom. We have used secular social-emotional learning (SEL) programs, which have become inappropriate at the middle school level, so we have not used them as much. Because much of our curriculum is from secular sources, it is becoming more important to make a conscious effort to tie the Word of God into everything we teach, and using the fruit of the Spirit as a regular reference point is a great way of tying in godly character traits throughout the school year.

Besides having a poster on display, we haven’t focused on the true development of the fruit as a character trait – something that develops overtime, not occurring immediately because you read it from the board. I would like to do better in presenting that principle, otherwise the students would be prone to mix it up as if it were some magical trait (like a Disney or Marvel character’s ability to transform by way of a superpower).
