My loss of freedom to choose came when I began to struggle with health, and was subsequently diagnosed with and disabled by a neurological disease. This didn’t fit into my life’s plan, and my choices of how to live (professionally, physically… ) were greatly altered. In response, my goals shifted to self-sufficiency, proving that I was still capable, and not feeling worthless.

Feeling stuck in a toxic work environment could really be due to pursuing a goal of control and comfort…resulting in passivity or not taking risks

As stated in my answer above, my emtional state was such that I had lost all common sense in the matter and this created a loss of freedom to do anything but keep pursuing the very thing that was harming me most, but in my mind seemed to be the one thing that would finally free me, which was to be “loved” by someone, no matter the cost. Boy was that the wrong approach, and my hidden goal became my undoing.

We experience the loss of freedom when in our foolishness we wrongly perceive desires of importance as desires of necessity. These desires may hide underlying goals or hidden goals such as accolades, wealth or career accomplishments or being the best Mom or Dad or Christian.

I am not very sure of this relationship because Dr Crabb has not illustrated it very explicitly. He has not exposed what hidden goals his client had, nor had his client complained of a loss of freedom. His client merely said he felt spiritually dry although he still loved the Lord.
