“Complacency is the enemy of change.” Distress takes us to a place in which we’re desperate for relief and peace. When we are the most needy and our own strength is gone, we are ready for God to work. The disturbance tills the ground to make it ready for the change.

If that doesn’t occur, complacency cannot be rattled. We will be lukewarm, thinking we are just fine.

Change cannot occur in a state of complacency and satisfaction. Unless there is a disturbance within in the soul of a xtian that brings about suffering due to the tension between what their soul longs to be and who they really are. Dr Crabb describes this suffering as distinct from other difficult life circumstances because this only can cause change and growth.

Because without an awareness of the depravity within each of us, and our acknowledgement of that depravity, we have not fully surrendered to Christ and that Holy Tension, meant to draw us, will be little more than an anxiety that “I can take care of with a pill, or drink, or some other deversion,” when God is trying to use this tension to “turn our eyes upon Jesus” to see the full abundant life He had planned for us.

If we do not experience suffering we don’t truly realize our need for a savior or what the Savior suffered for us I’m order to save us and so that He could become our Great High Priest. It brings greater understanding and intimacy with our Lord.
