Before, a good leader was seen as someone who directs and leads by example. Now, a good leader is someone who listens, empowers others, leads with humility, and focuses on both guiding people and achieving goals.

While it would be easy to write a book on leadership from both what I have learned through my studies and own life experience, I would say the concept of what leadership looks like is similar to what the lecturer mentioned. However, I would have also woven in the topic of servant leadership, but understand that is a type of leadership.

I would describe a good leader as someone who first of all serves those he leads. This is done in the context of a relationship. A leader sees farther, sees sooner, and sees bigger. He realizes that the organization’s success is directly ties to the success of the people he leads.

Before this session, I would have said that good leaders support and encourage. Good leaders understand those they lead. They serve them and equip them for the task at hand. Good leaders create good people being led. After this session, I would say the same, but with more focus on leading others, supporting others, and serving others. Good leaders must be specific on what it is they are leading.

Before this lesson I would have described a good leader as one that uses their influence in a positive way. However, now I would add that they not only use their influence in a positive way, but also in a way to make, both the person being lead and the leader, better people.
