I have had a couple of mentors in my life for other things such as career and sports, But not for spiritual guidance. I’ve certainly looked up to many people in my church but not with a mentor type relationship. I do see the importance though

I now understand the urgency. My mentor, whom I thank God for daily, helped me to overcome obstacles in my life using a godly point of view. I always tried to do things my way and never let God take control.

Yes, most definitely. In the 5 years following Oct 1993 it was the support of older and more mature Christians, and the Discipleship which they offered which saw me through some of the most difficult and challenging seasons of repentance and growth I have ever experienced.

I don’t like the term “mentor” and feel it is yet another import from the secular world. Until fairly recently terms such as “Discipleship” or “Spiritual Fathers” (or Mothers) sufficed, and seem to resonate far more closely with Scripture.

Whilst, yes, I wholeheartedly understand, and buy into the concept of Spiritual Direction, as a Christian man, the issue is finding other Christian Men, who are willing to commit to such relationships, and who do not feel threatened by the levels of honesty such relationships require, is a major barrier to establishing such relationships. Most Christian men in my experience run a mile at the suggestion of these levels of accountability.

I am cautious about mentors. If I disagree with them, I am still expected to follow them. That makes me very nervous.

Yes and no. I have difficulty in “reading” people, and have become less trusting of people as I grow older. I would trust a trained professional who uses Biblical principles, but mentors are less likely to gain my trust, unless I can see how their mentoring tracks back to Biblical principles that I can agree with. I have no desired to be pressured into something I disagree with, even if the pressure is very gentle. I know that may sound unreasonable, but it is as close to the truth as I can make it.
