The reality of needing to profess Jesus as their Lord and Savior to spend eternity with Him is difficult for some. They want to live “good enough” lives without making a commitment in their faith. They think goodness and not a savior is what will give them eternity in heaven. The tend to think that hell is reserved for those who lived terrible lives. The thief on the cross next to Jesus demonstrated a need to profess his faith in the Lord. He did not have an opportunity to live a “good enough” life and yet he gets to experience eternity with God. A lot of very kind people are spending eternity in hell because they did not accept the Lord.

I think the idea of Heaven and Hell are the least compelling, the idea that if we don’t accept God we go to hell is sometimes hard even for the Christian to comprehend. It makes sense to those who believe, but to those who do not, it can be seen as a “I am not good enough” or it sounds like God is forcing the belief in him.

Least compelling would be that we are born with a sin nature, and must be reconciled to our God through an imputed righteousness. Non believers typically dislike the biblical view of the relationship between Gods sovereignty and mans free will.

Having to come to the reality of our need for a Savior, and that we can not word to receive salvation. For most, we feel like we have to do something in order to receive something, that we are in control of our destiny. Having to come to the understand that there is nothing we can do to secure our salvation, that everything has already been done and accomplished by Christ can be difficult for some to grasp and believe in. However, once grasped, it is the most freeing of all things!

Perhaps the most difficult part of being part of the Christian worldview is accepting Christ, His unusual birth and death, and resurrection. It defies understanding–a believer has to rely on trust in God for understanding through faith. I enjoy teaching on all of these stories in my Sunday school classes with young children. Coming to them with honest information and complete trust in Christ makes it easier to accept because I believe it myself.
