    Erasmus simply did not understand that righteousness in the presence of God is totally a gift and has nothing to do with pious human performance.

    1. Contrast-Luther could see the heart of his reform program was precisely over the issue of the total sovereignty of God’s grace and the total bondage of the human will in sin to sin, at least in the vertical relationship.
    2. Luther and Erasmus were biblical theologians,, they put all there energy and work into understanding the text of the scripture.
    3. Erasmus method was to look at biblical text and simply comment on its meaning, it’s surface meaning, and make it thereby a useful guide the life of love and goodness in the imitation of Christ. Luther wanted theology to penetrate scripture, to look at scripture as a whole and to get behind the meaning of any individual text to the message of the scripture as it relates to Christ.
