God speaks to us in three forms:

The creation—the book of nature: God’s majesty, power, wisdom, and creativity are all displayed in creation and point to an all powerful creator.

The human condition: We were created in the image of God, to have fellowship with Him. But because of our sin we are separated from God. But there is a God shaped vacuum in every human’s heart and a constant longing for that to be filled by God. We inherently sense the dissatisfaction with our lives, that we were meant for something greater than ourselves.

The Word of God—the Bible: Only the Word of God can explain how things really are, the reality that we find ourselves in, that God is the creator, the source of life and all things; that he created us in His image and loves us intensely and wants the best for us through a personal relationship with Him, yet He is Holy and just and could not let our sins go unpunished but loved us so much that He sent His one only son Jesus to pay the penalty and die in our place.

God is the ultimate artist who is the orchestrator of all that is created in life. He designed the world perfectly with all that is included in it. His law is unchanging at right in all it declare from what is written in scriptures.

As creator, God speaks to us in nature. I remember walking along the beach at night as a teenager and I knew that the whole was greater than the sum of the parts. The whole is God. As designer, God speaks to us in the incredible intricacy of his creation. I was dumbfounded by the complexity of DNA. Had I ever had doubts about the existence of God, that observation alone would have made me a Christian. As a lawgiver, God speaks to us through the Bible. I still have difficulty with the writing style of the Bible and I have an academic doctor’s degree. So I have too often read about a book in the Bible rather than read the book itself. I realize that I have missed the beauty of the different kinds of literature and the differing styles of writing. Reading the primary source, not the secondary source, is now a goal. I have much to look forward to.

As he connects in the lecture, God is demonstrated through nature. He speaks to us through his creation. He speaks to us through the human condition. His design is perfect to support life. And he speaks to us through the Bible. The lecturer makes the point that we shouldn’t limit our knowledge of God to only nature and the human condition, but to rather take advantage of His Word that he has authored and given us in the form of the Bible.

The cosmological argument tells us that God is the first cause, i.e. He is the creator. The design argument tells us that God is the designer. The moral argument tells us that God is the lawgiver. It says that, if there is no God, then there is no objective moral standard or duty. But since we do find that there are objective moral values and duties in life, then there must be a God. Mathematically, the argument starts from: “If not Q, then not P”. Logically, this is the same as “If P, then Q”. As long as we can show P to be true, then we have proven Q to be true.
