Then the LORD said to me, “The prophets are prophesying falsehood in My name. I have neither sent them nor commanded them nor spoken to them; they are prophesying to you a false vision, divination, futility and the deception of their own minds.”
Jeremiah 14:14 NASB

How long? Is there anything in the hearts of the prophets who prophesy falsehood, even these prophets of the deception of their own heart?
Jeremiah 23:26 NASB

Thus says the LORD of hosts, “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who are prophesying to you. They are leading you into futility; They speak a vision of their own imagination, Not from the mouth of the LORD.”
Jeremiah 23:16 NASB

“Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel who prophesy, and say to those who prophesy from their own inspiration, ‘Listen to the word of the LORD!’”
Ezekiel 13:2 NASB

Thus says the Lord GOD, “Woe to the foolish prophets who are following their own spirit and have seen nothing.”
Ezekiel 13:3 NASB

“Did you not see a false vision and speak a lying divination when you said, ‘The LORD declares,’ but it is not I who have spoken?”
Ezekiel 13:7 NASB

  1. These are just a few of the many examples in which the words of the prophets are identified with YHWH. The prophets’ motivation to proclaim a message wasn’t based on a subjective feeling; it was something expressed in the words of YHWH Himself. The core ministry of every true prophet was mediating the word of God. Some key distinctions between these prophets of YHWH and false prophets are pointed out in the Prophetic Books. Read the passages and note your observations.

“False” prophets might be better speakers, more charismatic, or even have larger followings, but they did not speak for YHWH. That’s the only thing that matters.
