A helpful image for Amos is that of feasters—people enjoying their meals and security while the poor suffer outside. The feasters are going through the motions of worship, but they’ve turned their back on God. They not only neglect the poor; they fail to realize a foreign army is near at hand, ready to take the feasters into exile.

After exile and ruin, God will raise up His people and rebuild the ruins. The land will overflow with abundance. The people will feast again—only this time they will invite the whole world to the feast and there will be no poor among them.

You lie on beds adorned with ivory
    and lounge on your couches.
You dine on choice lambs
    and fattened calves.
You strum away on your harps like David
    and improvise on musical instruments.
You drink wine by the bowlful
    and use the finest lotions,
    but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile;
    your feasting and lounging will end.

Amos 6:4-7 NIV
