At that time I will plant a crop of Israelites
and raise them for myself.
I will show love
to those I called “Not loved.”
And to those I called “Not my people,”
I will say, “Now you are my people.”
And they will reply, “You are our God!”
Hosea 2:23 NLTAs bad as things will get, God will be merciful and bring total restoration. In this passage, there is a play on the names of two of Gomer’s daughters, whom we met in chapter 1. The phrases “not loved” and “not my people” are the meaning behind the girls’ names, Lo-ruhammah, and Lo-ammi.
At the beginning of the book we don’t know if these children are Hosea’s, due to Gomer’s infidelity. God uses Hosea’s own uncertain paternity here to say, in effect, “It doesn’t matter that you’re behaving like you belong to someone else. If you return to me you will be my beloved people.” YHWH will show mercy and the people will blossom in the land of their inheritance:
