Yes, some teachings in faith communities may reflect ideas similar to great heresies, such as viewing the physical world as evil or relying solely on human effort for salvation. To guard against these mistakes, biblical passages like Genesis 1:31 affirm the goodness of creation, John 1:14 emphasizes the full humanity and divinity of Jesus, and Ephesians 2:8-9 highlights salvation as a gift from God. Additionally, Romans 8:9-11 speaks to the Holy Spirit’s role in empowering believers, while Romans 8:21-23 addresses the redemption of our physical bodies. These scriptures encourage a more biblically grounded understanding of faith.

I have not heard any teaching or speaking of heresy in my church.

I grew up in my local church thinking that Jesus was only divine, that He was not also truly human. I have come to understand through different studies, including the classes within the biblical ministries certificate, that in order for Jesus to truly redeem us from our sin, he had to also be human to die on the cross and take our sin upon Himself. He became the sacrifice for our sins once and forever. If He was only divine, He could not die and our redemption would not have take place. Reading through the different gospel accounts also helped with this clarification.

I have not heard any great heresies in our Church community lately. But there have been mature Christians who have fallen into a heresy type mind-set. In Matthew 6:19-21, we are told not to store up earthly treasures where thieves break in to steal. We are storing up many treasures we consider to be of great value to us. But, as we are told in Matthew, we should consider Heaven as our place of holding our valuables and treasures. The Lord knows that where our treasures or money is there will our hearts be also. If we follow Jesus there will be blessings and we will be in His presence, but if we follow even our family traditions and not our Lord, we will miss out. Heresies can be great or small but it is our hearts that make this so. Store up treasures in Heaven by knowing what a heresy is and avoid it.

Over the years, I have heard people claim that Jesus was not fully God or fully man. However, this was typically by single individuals rather than A widely accepted idea. I think the closest thing I see to heresy is people living out the idea that they have to earn their salvation. I Have heard the excuse that before people will be baptized, they feel as though they need to fix their life first. When asked, they would probably acknowledge that salvation is a free gift from God, but we often do not live that out in our dated day walks.

I often read 1 and 2 John to remind me about the dangers of false teaching and to stand firm in correct teaching.
