I would like to think so on two levels though there is always room for improvement. The first level, is discussing Jesus’ perfect redemption of us because of our sins. The second one is allowing students to start over in my course with a clean slate after misbehaving. I do think this can be difficult with students who continually disrupt the course and they do need to have consequences. On the other hand, taking some extra time outside of course time to get to know that student can often reveal underlying reasons that can be dealt with to make lasting changes.

I try to be a “teacher of redemption”, yet I understand I fail daily due to my own sinfulness. It has to be a decision made and prayer spoken each day. One thing I do as I strive to be this type of teacher is not letting students’ mistakes define them. I work with students to help them learn from their mistake and make a positive change. Regarding assessments, I find it important for students to earn their grade, yet I do my best to work with students to learn from their mistakes.

Redemption is to turn away – 180 degrees. I think this is the goal of any teacher when they begin, to help those who are going astray and turn them around. I don’t know if I am able to do this but I do attempt to plant the seeds of truth into those who need it. I show them they are worthy of love and that their better selves should behave in a more Christ-aligned manner.

Yes, I believe that I am a teacher of redemption. We often talk about spiritual redemption in course and the need for a Savior, but I also try my best to create an atmosphere of forgiveness and grace. Students might receive a consequence, but we discuss the correction and how we can make better decisions the next time. I try my best not to have those discussions in front of the other students so that they don’t feel embarrassed and treat them with respect.

I try to be a “teacher of redemption” and not to hold previous transgressions against students. I am a sinful creature and so of course I am not consistent with this. I think the Lord works in me everyday and reminds me when I need to take a step back, breathe, and then start fresh with a student. I think that one way I am consistent is that I try to point all our lessons back to Jesus Christ. I really talk extensively about redemption and how Jesus died for us. I want my first graders to know that they are already rescued, but that in order to receive that redemption they need to ask Jesus into their heart.
