I remind myself and my students that I am here to, “Set you up to succeed”. This quote refers to their restored relationship with God when they sin, and academic success. There is always room for repentance, the goal of discipline to be restored to a right relationship with God and to have a changed heart, not only changed behavior.

I know now that I’ve seen it demonstrated by others but wouldn’t have been able to label what I witnessed correctly without misjudging it as “patient” or “kind”. Now I can look forward to working towards implementing it more proactively during the course of the upcoming school year.

They are clear on classroom expectations and know if they choose an inappropriate action I will talk with them. I allow them to make better choices or have to deal with the consequence. They always know I am there to help correct their behavior so they can make better choices in the future. They also know I discipline them because I care about them. I want to be an example of Jesus to my students correcting them in love and walking along side them to help them become the men and women of God He created them to be.

When a student has broken one of our rules and needs to be disciplined, I explain to them that when they do not follow rules, their are consequences for their actions. I let them know that just because I had to discipline them does not mean I don’t love them and that will never change. I talk about instances in the Bible where we can see the redemption of God.
