Biblical redemption means that Christ offered me a spiritual contractual exchange, my sin for His righteousness through the sacrifice of the cross. It by grace only, His favor extended out of love, that I am restored to a healed relationship with my Creator Father, will full rights of eternal inheritance as His child. He bought me out of slavery and I live in the freedom to choose the path of righteousness. He transformed my heart to love His will and to despise what separates me from Him. This gives me contagious joy that I can share with my students.

Teaching redemption is to model a lifestyle of grace, forgiveness and hope. When a student rebels, I must patiently teach about humble repentance, apologizing and restoration of the relationship through forgiveness. It is wrong to hold a grudge, to shame and punish him out of revenge. That restoration brings hope for a positive relationship going forward and academic renewal. The student knows that the past mistakes do not doom his future standing.

Yes, I feel I am a “teacher of redemption” as my main goal with all discipline is to point the child to the fact that we are living in a fallen world but that God sent Jesus to redeem us and help us to become more like Him. Every moment is a teachable moment and a way to direct their hearts back to the Lord.

I like to teach redemption by reminding students that God’s mercies are new every morning. When they make a mistake, I want them to know there are consequences, healing, and moving on.

I do try to be a teacher of redemption in my classroom. I hope to see kids as “unfinished products” who are in need of someone to come alongside and help them grow in their salvation and sanctification. I think when we have this perspective we will interact with students more with an attitude of grace.

I am far from perfect, but I do believe in giving people more than one chance to correct a wrong. If I fail I want to be one who is humble and admits it and makes it right.
