It is part of how we learn and it is part of how I am able to get to know their strengths and weaknesses and adjust curriculum accordingly. Now that COVID is mostly over, I am able to hug students who need it, especially after not doing well on an activity or project/assessment and remind them that there is still hope and chances. Same with behavior. Children will not always follow rules. There will be broken rules and on the other side of that an opportunity for a teachable moment for discussion and guidance.

I have actually been told by other teachers (at a different school) that I was too easy on my students when it came to giving them second chances on their grades, homework, etc. My current administrator reminded me that loving grace is what is found and taught in the Bible, not a “no second chances” environment. That helped me so much to realize that I wasn’t a failure as a teacher, but was in fact showing the love and mercy of Christ in my grading practices and by not holding grudges against my students. I hope this encourages someone else struggling with a similar situation. Please don’t misunderstand, rules and procedures are important for the safety and learning of students, but so is grace and mercy. Praise God that He has given me chance ,after chance, after chance, when I mess up, I hope to give the same to my students!
