As a volitional being, man usually chooses those behaviors which he thinks (or at least hopes) will facilitate the attainment of his chosen goals.

We have the freedom to choose paths in our lives that may be along the path the Lord designed for us or it may not be. Some of those decisions we make are driven by how we feel about the importance of those goals in our lives. How we feel about these goals also can dictate our behavior towards achievement of such goals.

After listening to Dr Crabb, I can see that our goals are best set out of our relationship with God. Everything in our lives is secondary to our relationship with God. If we write goals that reflect our relationship with God, and in reliance upon the holy Spirit’s help, we will see our behaviour and character become conforming to Christ’s. We thus fulfill our desires of necessity and our desires of importance may well be achieved also.

However, often many people’s goals and desires to achieve their goals are done in their own volition. They do not involve God’s participation or have a behaviour development component factored into the outcome. These goals, if achieved, have no effect on character development, which is our ultimate aim, and therefore on a person’s behaviour. They may reflect a regression in behaviour during the striving to achieve the goals.

If a goal is set of achieving a satisfactory life, there is a path forward whose steps will include clinging to the belief that meeting the goal will bring satisfaction therefore, I must behave in certain ways to attain the goal at all costs. The behaviors exist as a consequence of the goal.

We set goal that give direction to our life to that we believe will bring about the desired result and the satisfaction we are seeking. Therefore, I choose a strategy and adjust my actions and conduct accordingly in ways that I believe if followed will cause me to achieve my goal.
