As a missionary, I face this situation frequently. Typically, I start with curiosity. I ask what they believe and listen intently. From there, I find commonalities, and find opportunities to tie something they said that they believe in to a truth about the nature God, Jesus, and/or our necessity of a Savior, or I try to respond to questions that they have. Whenever I speak with someone, I do try to lay out a logical “case” while also showing my excitement in being able to share the joy I have in Jesus.I don’t necessarily pull out my Bible and read Scripture, but I always refer back to points from Scripture.

I’ve had a lot of experiences where I have had to explain and defend the reason for my faith in Jesus. I’ve spoken to some Muslims and they pressed me with some interesting questions, some of which i had answers for, but some left me a bit stumped. I found speaking with them a lot more difficult than speaking to someone in the new age or just an atheist. I think the thing that a lot of unsaved people struggle with is the idea that while God’s love is perfect, his wrath, and judgement are also perfect, and hell is very real and eternal. I hadn’t even brought those to the discussion but those things were asked of me to defend. I would say something like “God is perfect and therefore he must punish sin”. But that often doesn’t suffice because there are many people who either don’t understand the concept of sin or just reject it all together.

At one time I was working with a client who attended Sunday service. Little did I know that he went to a liberal church of the non-Christian faith. He was in a wheelchair and I provided transportation on a couple of occasions and had to stay with him for service. I was so excited to get paid for going to church. Boy was I wrong! The service had no resemblance whatsoever to what I was expecting. There was no mention of God, secular songs were sung mostly, and practices of other religions were everywhere. The “sermon” was really just a political propaganda speech and there wasn’t even any prayer! It was more like a social club than a real church. I have attended services with numerous beliefs that differ from my own, but never like that. After service as they socialized, I was quizzed about what I believed and they told me I was narrow minded but I held my ground. They did not sway me.

Yes and I think I did a poor job. I want to know how to respond appropriately to the questions of unbelievers.

Yes. I remember the time when I found out that one of my classmates didn’t believe in God. I was surprised, and I thought at that moment that I should try to explain to her the One Verse Evangelism. However, it was disrupted by our next subject and schedule. I told her that I wanted to talk to her again and continue our conversation. But unfortunately, because it wasn’t my priority and I was in spiritual decline, I failed to talk to her again about it. It was a missed opportunity and a failure of mine.
