Can you think of a time when you were called upon to give a defense of your faith in Christ? If so, briefly explain.

I Pastor a Church and so in some ways I am called to give a defense of my faith every time I preach.

I have never been asked to defend my faith. When people ask about where I find my hope, I often talk about the character of God and why I need Him.

My son was having issues with his wife. He was very despondent. He questioned why God would let this happen. During many discussions over the phone we talked about who God is. Was He a mean dictator that enjoyed seeing us suffered or does he have any care for us in our tribulations. Of course I turned to many passages of God’s love for us. Also, I explained that we don’t see the whole picture, only God does.

So I go to the gym every morning Monday through Friday. From time to time I will see a man named Ron. Who says to be Christian and to believe in God, but finds it odd that we needed a middle man, Jesus, to grant us salvation. He asked me the other morning after I had just killed my back day at the gym, “Why do we need Jesus to get to God?” Also he said, “When I pray to God, I pray to God, not Jesus.” I had so many answers come to mind, that I could not really put my finger on one particular reason. But whatever I did say, he liked it enough to say that he would like to grab a coffee sometime and talk more about this “Jesus”. When I got home after my workout, my mind started to align with all the thoughts that had come to mind concerning this conversation. Amongst more of my complex thoughts about the issue, I found the best answers to be simple: Jesus WAS God. In human form. So when you are praying to God, you are also praying WITH Jesus and vice versa. I look forward to more conversations on the matter. For now I have more in depth answers to Ron’s question.

I work with a few people who are either on the fence or clearly atheist. We often have discussions as to why, and how I can believe like I believe. My explanation to them is, for many years I doubted too. But too many things have occurred in my fifty plus years that I couldn’t doubt the existence and love of God. One of the experiences I bring to them is, my mother, who had drug me from church to church during my youth, was critically ill. During the last visit I had with her at the hospital, I was trying to speak to her, but she was completely unresponsive. The doctors had explained that she had been fighting so hard to remain with us, she was “brain dead”, but her body was still working to keep going. I prayed for her, and me. It was what she taught me to do. My visit was over, I grabbed her hand and kissed her face, and said, “l love you momma”. My step father and a nurse witnessed her reply to me, “I love you too”. They were as shocked as I was, but tests again revealed she had no brain activity. I smiled knowing that God had allowed her to let me know He was real, and she was going to be in good hands. My faith confirmed as she passed from this life to her home.
