Commenting on death, Dallas Willard said, “Death is avoided in common discussions by human beings because it is the ultimate failure. At death you face the fact you are not God, you do not run the universe. Death is the ultimate vulnerability.” In what ways have you seen people express their sense of vulnerability when considering their own death or the death of someone they care about? Do you agree with the statement: “At death you face the fact you are not God”? Explain your answer. - Discussion Forum - Artos Academy (BETA)

I disagree with the statement : At death you face the fact you are not God. I know for a fact as I type this, I am not God. There is only one God and I am not Him. I don’t need to face death to know that. However, at the same time when death takes a loved one, or threatens to take a loved one, the realization that you are not in control is overwhelming.

Yes; there is only one God. The only way for us to know what happens after death is what the Bible tells us.

The stages of grief about people’s own mortality are all experienced to some degree by people that know they’re going to die. My friend is dying from stage 4 colon cancer. She is in her forties and has a wonderful husband and children. She has been focused on fighting her illness but has resolved to die and is somber as of late.

We face death every day and if a person has not reconciled their sin with God, I can see how one would think about not overseeing their own transience. This thought about not being God is subjective to the life one has lived. If a person is saved, they already know God in their heart and understand that there is an entity larger than themselves.

Death is the great equalizer. It comes to the powerful and the weak, the rich and the poor, and nothing one can do can prevent it. Anything good that one possesses here on earth will pale in comparison to what they have in heaven, or if they are not a believer, is the only good that they will ever have as there will be an eternity without goodness awaiting them.

Death is a very humbling experience. Even the most powerful of men are brought low by this enemy. They find that they are powerless to change the reality of death. In essence, they realize that they are not God.
