Deb McCormick, suggests that in order for a small group to thrive, the members must feel connected. She states: “The team leader . . . is the one responsible for helping their team make the connection.” What does she mean by “connection”?

The team members must feel as though they belong and are valued, and there must be trust within the group.

connecting in relationships is what I think she means, or connecting the dots on a subject being studied.

The leader has to bring the group together. Most groups form with common interest. By this I mean there should be something which all of the members have in common. If the group is too large, then mitigate it by relieving all members from the group who do not share the same interest. Also, having every member to introduce themselves and state why they have joined the group is an icebreaker. You can also start the first group meeting off with a team or group exercise that would help everyone get comfortable with one another.

A connection between members of any group is a common familiarity, a sense of belonging, and a sense of inclusion. All of this is in the context of a singular clearly defined purpose. A sense of comradery and ease amongst the participants.

‘Connection’ to me means that the person feels their opinions are valued, their presence is desired by other members and that what they bring to the group will ultimately help the group reach its goals.
