Describe a recent time when you’ve been discouraged with a student’s progress. Have you witnessed a change in the student’s life, or are you still waiting for that change to occur?

There is a particular student that was doing well and excelling and then for whatever reason took a step back and became disruptive and was not able to be on task and learn like they once were. This was discouraging for me as a teacher. I’ve found you just have to keep being encouraging and build them back up and little by little through prayer and counsel you start to see a change. I’m still waiting on major change to occur but sometimes its the little victories that mean the most.

I’m still waiting. This question is actually very intersting, because I’ve been praying all year long not only for students but fro my school in general, and i have not seen any answers or progress of any kind. However I know that God has His perfect time and like the lecturer said, students might come to Christ after they leave the school. We might never know but we have the assurance that the Lord hears our prayers and will answer according to His will and in His time.

I had a student who struggled academically for the majority of the school year prior to COVID. Once COVID hit, she had an even more difficult time learning and processing information. It was difficult to see her struggle even more. Nevertheless, God strengthened me to be patient with her in spite of the increasing struggle she had with online learning. And towards the end of the school year, she did better. More importantly, she trusted in Jesus more with her academic difficulties at the end of the year.

Probably the most recent discouraging “lack of student progress” is in relationship to apathy – particularly toward treatment of peers. The overall lack of empathy and remorse is something that no spoken Word, inspirational speech, or consequence has been able to change. It is very discouraging, and I am still waiting. I’m sure the Spirit is working in the back ground, and I’m trusting in that. In the mean time, I am just trying to stay faithful and hopeful.

I have been discouraged by several students who Google answers to homework, rather than doing the work themselves. It goes against my strong sense of honesty on so many levels. Out Godly head of school spoke in chapel one day earlier this semester about cheating and how it broke so many commandments: lying, stealing, not honoring their parents who pay their tuition, etc. I was impressed and spoke to three courses about this problem. As for waiting for change in the student, it is hard to tell so far. I believe some have done better and their understanding of the subject matter is increasing. I am still unhappy about the problem and will try to address it earlier in the term next year.
