Occasionally I have had to remove a disruptive student from the classroom to restore a peaceful studious atmosphere. More often, when a student is loud and distracting, I will quietly go to him, get down on his level and calmly ask him to focus on the lesson and make a good decision for himself and the course. Instead of correcting him publicly, thereby shaming him, the student is respected and will respond with respect to me. Sometimes, I deal with a disobedient student with even more patience. The other students can follow my example.

In our second grade classroom, we use the “HOW I ACT” chart will “tallies” to guide and direct behavior. I always help my students understand that we all might make mistakes and our goal is to learn from them and not continue the behavior. Warnings are given. If a tally is given, time is taken with the student to understand what he/she chose to do and how they can learn and grow from it. Natural consequences are also used as tallies are not the “end-all-be-all” and, if overused, can become ineffective. I have told students in the past that since they took my teaching/learning time by not using their time wisely, I will use their free time and use it with them walking a lap or two thinking on how they can change that behavior. All children are shown love and grace throughout this process. I never purposely “look for” a child doing something wrong. Every moment is a teachable moment. Each day also begins fresh because God’s mercies are new every morning and so are mine.

At the heart of discipline should be restoration.

A lot of times I ask students how their actions did or did not fit into God’s expectations for them.

I also point out that they need to seek God’s help in correcting their behavior that is not honoring to Him.

We have discipline policies set in place at our school that allow us not only to address the behavior, but also walk along side of the students that are struggling. Our school first will talk one on one with students and discuss alternative behavior and reteach positive behavior. We recognize the sin nature and go to the Word of God to reteach.

I think that my school models discipline in a good way in that we want students to recognize sin and also the grace God gives us. Students meet with administration based on reports teachers file so that un-Christlike behavior can be addressed as see that they are reconciled with the party they acted against.
