Discipline at my school is in form of strikes and records. First offenders are counseled by the teacher if it is a mild offense. Second offenders of the same act are addressed by the head of the department and their parents are officially emailed or the deputy principal with their parents being informed. If the same offense continues the parents are brought in officially to the school for a talk. To some extent, it has been effective.

Using a warning system that involves the parents seems to help. In my classroom, I find talking to the students individually about their behavior is most helpful.

I work to meet students where they are. This means working to understand WHY they misbehaved. Walking alongside a student to snow although they did something bad they are not bad. Our school also uses a student life tear that can speak with students and allows them time b calm down and regroup before returning to course if it has been necessary to remove – the _ student.

Occasionally I have had to remove a disruptive student from the classroom to restore a peaceful studious atmosphere. More often, when a student is loud and distracting, I will quietly go to him, get down on his level and calmly ask him to focus on the lesson and make a good decision for himself and the course. Instead of correcting him publicly, thereby shaming him, the student is respected and will respond with respect to me. Sometimes, I deal with a disobedient student with even more patience. The other students can follow my example.

In our second grade classroom, we use the “HOW I ACT” chart will “tallies” to guide and direct behavior. I always help my students understand that we all might make mistakes and our goal is to learn from them and not continue the behavior. Warnings are given. If a tally is given, time is taken with the student to understand what he/she chose to do and how they can learn and grow from it. Natural consequences are also used as tallies are not the “end-all-be-all” and, if overused, can become ineffective. I have told students in the past that since they took my teaching/learning time by not using their time wisely, I will use their free time and use it with them walking a lap or two thinking on how they can change that behavior. All children are shown love and grace throughout this process. I never purposely “look for” a child doing something wrong. Every moment is a teachable moment. Each day also begins fresh because God’s mercies are new every morning and so are mine.
