We co-constructed norms with the students in our classroom based on anchor values. Inevitably the values that aligned with the fruit of the Spirit would surface and then we would discuss what it looked like to live them in community. I would generalize examples of Christ’s behavior as models, in hopes that one day they would meet Him for themselves and go, “That man in all Ms. Sinclair’s examples was Jesus!”

I walk in relationship with my students while keeping them accountable for their choices. At my school, students are expelled after repeatedly choosing to cross established boundaries.

I like to model respect and I believe that respect given is respect earned. If you set a standard on what is required in the classroom and keep that standard then it will be easier in the long run, and they will respect you for that.

One example of how our classroom technology policies are followed through in my elementary computer class: We recently had a fifth grader email a bunch of poop emojis (out of curiosity and impulsivity) to the entire high school staff and leadership team. He’s had to sit directly in front of me with limited and supervised access because he has shown a need for additional digital decision-making support. His online activity is highly monitored and he has lost many privileges. When he emailed a classmate a nonsense word, his consequence was more strict than it would have been had it been his only offense. We continue to work with him toward an obedient and trustworthy student but it takes constant alertness.
