Always begin with the least necessary “force.” When addressing negative behavior, teachers should “walk up the ladder” and allow opportunities for the student to correct themself. If the student doesn’t do this, consequences increase and additional “force” is required. I also believe that whenever discipline is enacted in a classroom, the teacher should always have a personal touch with that student. A teacher’s authority should always be balanced by fostering the personal relationship between them and the student.

Being consistent. Being organized. Getting to know the students through conversations while we walk in line or while at recess…

I set rules, remind my students and then follow through with the guidelines that I have set. I say what I mean and mean what I say.

Setting rules and expectations the first day of school, reviewing and reminding daily until they know. Praising positive things seen throughout the day.

I set class rules and expectations the first day of school, we go over the student handbook (which they sign as well as parents). If I do have to discipline I redirect them so they can correct their actions. Once they correct it I thank them for making a good decision. If I see they are still struggling a little after making thing right, I will call them to my desk and ask if we should pray about it.
