My style encourages good behavior and fosters a desire to do better if poor behavior is highlighted. This manner encourages all students, as they naturally want a fair environment and to have a place that is positive and uplifting. When I have repeated trouble with an individual, I talk to him/her privately and if that is not enough, I talk to caregivers. I hold the line for respect of authority and fair treatment, something administrators also should do.

I hold my students to high academic standards. I am also strict and discipline bad behavior. But I do so to respect my students and their overall learning environment. It only takes 1-2 students to ruin the learning environment. I am strict and discipline in order protect the 20+ other students in my classroom, to respect their time and good behavior so that they feel safe and able to learn. And students in turn know what to expect from me. I hold myself to the same high standards and work hard and bring my most energy and passion everyday to help students understand the material and am always available outside of class. Outside of class I am approachable and nuturing in a different way that allows students feel like they can come to me with anything.

I believe in discipline. At the beginning of the school year I have students help me set our class rules. We all agree on the importance of them and they feel part of it. I also believe that discipline without relationship becomes dictatorship. To me, where discipline fails relationship covers.

I am very much in favor of the idea of respect and nurturing students. I find that, in reflection, I am disciplining in a way that nurtures my students, but that I also need to figure out where boundaries are so that I don’t become burned out.

Establish the schoolwide/classroom expectations and policies (reinforcing the related Biblical principles). Discuss and post the policies – along with their respective rewards & consequences – for frequent reminders and positive reinforcement.
Be honest and open as to when those expectations and policies might have to be evaluated, adapted or even upgraded.
After hearing the messages from this particular class, I am definitely reexamining my discipline policies to make sure they are indeed nurturing students (“nurturing seeds and pruning weeds”).
