Describe your discipline philosophy. Do you think you are disciplining in a way that nurtures your students?

My discipline philosophy is using positive reinforcement to address an issue and to discuss the correct way of handling it.

The goal of positive discipline is to teach children to develop safe, socially responsible behavior that promotes self-respect and respect for the feelings and property of others. Remember that discipline and punishment are not the same. Discipline is guidance and teaching that promotes positive behavior.

I prefer allowing students to earn rewards for good behavior and doing what is right instead of only reprimanding or correcting students for not doing the right thing or misbehaving. This allows students to look forward to this prize they earned.

I do not think I had thought of my discipline procedure and it’s effect on the ‘nurturing’ of students.
My discipline philosophy: Maintain order; Students should feel safe in the classroom; Teacher should be consistent in the implementation of the discipline.

I think it is important, as Dr. Black said, to have clear rules and to follow them. This sets the stage for a well run classroom. Once the rules are set and the students know what to expect and have seen you lovingly enforce them, then you can have fun together. There is respect and within that there is structure and safety. Kids like boundaries whether they know it or not. They learn to trust you and then they can share more. I do learn their names and love to learn more about them. It only gets more fun as we get to know each other better. I personally have kids with learning disabilities so I can spot those kids too. In the Art Room is where these kids can often shine.
