My discipline philosophy is based on having classroom expectations and consequences for when those expectations are not met. The consequences increase with the frequency or the severity of the inappropriate behavior. I am struggling in this area, so last year I read, THE First Days of School: How to Be an Effective Teacher. I tried out many approaches in this book successfully. However, as the student behavior got better, I stopped consistently enforcing the consequences and I need to do better next year.

I try to make sure and establish a very loving and safe environment from the very first day of school. When students know their teacher loves them, there tends to be less discipline necessary. When I do encounter discipline issues I approach it from the sin nature of the child. I will warn or ask students to correct the behavior, but if that behavior continues we take the next step and have a private conversation. In that conversation I will talk about how the behavior became sinful when they chose not to obey what I had asked of them. I walk through graciously that we need to fix the disfellowship in our relationship now because of that sin before we can go back to course. They need to first pray and ask the Lord to forgive them and then they need to ask me to forgive them. If this correction doesn’t go well I may then involve parents and the principle. I also have a ticket system in my classroom for more minor infractions. If students are blurting out, continually talking when they shouldn’t be, being too loud, etc. I may just charge them tickets. I have a raffle every week for things like food, candy and other treasures and all kinds of coupons they can purchase for things like a special chair or 50% off a math assignment that they really love having tickets for so they sure don’t like to lose them. I do feel as if I am nurturing them through discipline just as I would my own children.

I am just really learning how to create a discipline philosophy. As an ESL teacher, I have small courses and have never really had policies. But I have seen how this can cause issues. So I am working on developing a philosophy. I do think a s the teacher it is my responsibility to set a positive tone for learning in the classroom. I am also understanding that policies and procedures need to be taught over time. I can’t just read them once and hope that students get it. I do think that discipline is best when I have a relationship with the students. I also see that if I want it in the policy, I have to be willing to enforce it all of the time. I pray that I can continue to grow in this area.

I want my students to enjoy art, but I have looked back over last year and I realize I need to have clear policies on what I expect in my room and do a better job with my disciplining when students get out of line. I believe I have let too many behaviors go unchecked. The students are not doing “bad” things, they are more off task and not accomplishing as much work as I would like for them to do. I think I need to communicate better with what I expect and I plan to work on that this coming year.

My discipline policy is based on grace and giving students 3 attempts to correct their behavior before a consequence is enacted. There are exceptions to this rule depending on the severity of the action. Once a student has been separated from the situation I ask them a couple of questions before they reengage the course. First, I ask them what happened. Secondly, I ask them why they chose to make this decision and lastly I ask them how they could handle the decision differently next time. I believe that I am disciplining in a way that nurtures students because it allows the student to have their voice heard and eventually they are allowed to actively participate back in the course once the discussion has happened. I also try to make sure that this discipline is handed out fairly to all of my students. I am a coach and so I want to make sure that there isn’t any perceived favoritism being played because of my position.
