Everyone had expectations, and when those expectations weren’t met, we might conference about it. My door is always open for my students, and I make sure they know it.

My philosophy is for all of my students to ask me any question that they would like to as many times as they would like to and me answering their questions every single time. My students love me for not being judgmental towards them and allowing them to ask many questions.

I have 15 classes that come through my class every week, K-8th. My number one rule is to love one another as Christ has loved us. On the first day of class I let my students know what is expected and I have those expectations written on my board to go back to if I witness behavior that is not acceptable. I try to speak to students away from others so they are not shamed, but nurtured.

Setting clear expectations from the beginning helps, as does consistently holding to those standards. I’ve also found that the better I can engage students in the learning process, the fewer discipline problems I encounter.

In my classroom, I set clear expectations and try to remind them of those expectations when students tend to stray. I like to praise/reward students who are doing what I asked and following our class rules. This makes other students want to receive this same praise/reward. Sometimes, I know that students have had a bad morning or something has happened in their lives that cause the behavior and have to remind myself that God loves me even when I am displeasing to Him. I try to show my students love and compassion while at the same time remaining firm on where I stand with what is expected.
