The discipline philosophy in my classroom is “do your work but don’t cause a problem for me, your classmates, or anyone else in the universe.” I am not sure that I always nurture students with this philosophy. Too often, I promise to send them to the office (and may not follow through), so I use a threat to involve the principal or parent. I show my frustration and do not always tell them how welcome they are to rejoin our class when they can make a better choice (stop the disruption).

I have high and clear expectations for students. At the beginning of the year, I go over expectations, and I refer back to them often. I have a Biblical based Reflection Form that I have students fill out when they have made a negative choice. I have a positive “class cash” reward system that rewards good behavior. I think it is important for students to know the “why” behind rules and discipline. I also appreciate that I can use a faith based way to work through issues, and I like to pray with my students about making better choices in the future.

It is my philosophy that no student is perfect and that all will need some level of correction at some point. How correction is given and discipline if needed will depend on the circumstance and the student.

I have clear expectations in my classroom. My students know I take our school rules very seriously and uphold those rules in my class. My students know the expectations so we can have fun learning in a safe and loving environment. Each of our rooms has the school rules on the wall. Often we refer to them as a class and review the expectations. I give warnings and sometimes allow a student to choose to stay in their seat or move if they feel they will be able to focus better in another location.

I try to have clear expectations in my classroom. I also try to be encouraging and positive with students so that they feel that they are in a safe place to learn. When I need to discipline students, I try to have a conversation with them privately so that they understand why they are receiving a consequence. I try to be consistent with all students.
