One of my top favorite teachers in high school was David Lawrence. He was very smart, challenged me beyond what I thought I could do, encouraged creative thinking, made learning very fun, and showed us that eccentricity — if honest — was a characteristic more valuable than being predictable. He was also an outspoken Christian and, although he was a teacher in the public school, never was embarrassed or ashamed to talk about Truth as it applied to class.

I had an English teacher in high school who made me feel seen, encouraged me and saw something in me that I didn’t even see myself. He built confidence in my writing and English became one of my favorite subjects.

My 9th Grade Math teacher was smart, attentive and always led great discussions in class. He would not settle for less, his explanations would include background on formulas and how to learn it instead pf memorizing. I attribute to him my passion for math.

I can easily name a teacher who had a positive influenmce on my life, because he did much of what Dr. Black mentions in her lecture. I hade Mr. Aguilar (we called him Mr. A.) in middle school, he invested inself in knowing students, and their families, and how he could help navigate any challenges. One of mind was a mild case of ADHD, so, without a formal IEP, he took the time to work with me and structure a learening plan that worked for me. He was kind, and became a sort of mentor to me. He eventually became a close friend of my entire family, and has a lot to do with why I am a teacher today.

A college professor of Creative Writing so distinctly validated my abilities as a student-learner and as a writer. Her goodwill, patience, humor, kindness, extension of her own time, access to resources as well as her professional network made me feel so validated in my interests and pursuits as a writer – not as if I was taking a class to merely pass the time or to fulfill a set of credits. She added immensely to the perspectives and role I now carry as a classroom Teacher.
