I remember my freshman year of community college where I had tested very poorly in the mathematics assessment, so I was placed in beginning math. I had struggled in all of my high school math classes and needless to say, I felt quite stupid having tested so poorly upon starting college. However, the math teacher who I was assigned to taught math in a way that totally connected with my brain and my learning style. His lectures were amazing because they were so clear and easy to follow. For the first time in my life, math made sense! I would always go into his office early and ask for help on homework questions and he always made time for me. He encouraged me and would compliment me in my grasping of math concepts and improving test grades. I had taken Mr. Berland’s math classes for the next 2 years to catch my math knowledge up. By the end of this time, I had fallen in love with math and I ended up being a math tutor and helping other students to grasp difficult algebra concepts. In many ways I felt like Mr. Berland had saved me because I no longer felt stupid and actually felt quite intelligent in the math field because he helped me understand math in a way that no other teacher had. It is my hope that I will be able to touch student’s lives in the same way that Mr. Berland had touched my life.

My second grade teacher, Mrs. Martin, was my favorite elementary teacher. As a child, she inspired me to be a teacher. I loved the fun ways she implemented learning with songs and that she would reward us with gummy bears. She sang Scripture to us, melodies that I still remember to this day. Her love for the Lord and her students was very evident in her life.

Mrs Dickenson was my trig teacher. She was very hard on me because I use to talk ALOT! But she would always check with me after class and make sure I was doing okay. She also came to all my cheer events and outside events to let me know she cared even though she was hard on me.

I had a middle school math and science teacher that will always be my favorite. She was kind and funny but also made sure we stuck by the rules. She is one of the only teachers I remember really focusing on getting to know her students on a personal level, and making us feel valued as a people instead of just a roster.

Ms.Beepat believed I was full of good things and incredibly capable of impacting the world, even when the data didn’t support it. She spoke to me from a deeper knowledge–as one who saw me as God did. This caused her to treat the data with suspicion because it didn’t line up with what God revealed. She called me out to call me up and that made me realize that I mattered.
