He took the time to teach me about photosynthesis and we did an experiment for the science fair. I think he chose me because he could tell that I loved science. Anyway, I’ll never forget it.

A teacher that was influential to me was Mrs. Robertson. She taught me in English and History in high school and the way she wove religion and christian worldviews within the education was inspiring and so helpful.

My high school science teacher was also my softball coach. He taught me that hard work and perseverance pays off. He taught me that I can be successful even if I am not the best at Chemistry; that building relationships with students and pouring into their lives would allow them to learn more and be more receptive to instruction and to trying hard things.

I recall a young, new teacher, her first year of teaching. My first year in a new building with new classmates. This Latin teacher was enthusiastic about her subject, Latin, and taught pointedly and so well. She took orneriness from the class in stride and often outdid us with her hilarious counter attacks. We learned so much, and had so much fun. There was no personal involvement or Christian teaching being large classes in public school. But I gained a confidence academically due to her diligence and skill.

Growing up in public school I never experienced a teacher whom I felt truly cared about and loved for who I was, until I was in high school. My cheerleading coach, who was also the school’s English teacher, was probably the first teacher that I encountered that cared more about us as human beings than imparting all her knowledge upon us. She invested her time in growing our character and took interest in our lives. She truly listened to our feelings and concerns. She empowered us to take on more responsibility, grow, and be better. After a while, I learned that she was a Christian and taught VBS every summer at her local church. Looking back I can see how her love for Jesus directed her words and actions in and out of the classroom (or gym in my case).
