Mrs. Hebert my second grade teacher. I was struggling with Math and just felt like it was all so impossible during that time of the day. I really just gave up and thought that was my way out. She never gave up on me, she always told me I was smart, and that it was just a challenge that I would get through with success. She coached me, tutored me before and after school, she spend some of her Saturday’s working with me. She stayed by my side throughout all of my school years until she passed. She is the one who made me feel the success and now Math is no longer a weakness.

One person who comes to mind is Miss Klein, my high school Spanish teacher. Interestingly, I can hardly speak Spanish now, and I never really loved learning the language. However, what made her stand out was the personal interest she took in her students and her genuine investment in their lives. I remember how she kept her classroom open during lunch, allowing us girls to hang out and have meaningful conversations with her about life. She even took us out to a nice Italian restaurant for lunch as a group, creating special memories outside the classroom. Miss Klein prayed for us, attended extracurricular events beyond school hours, and showed her unwavering support in countless ways.

I remember Mr. Charles, my biology teacher in high school. One thing I remembered was his consistent encouragement, when I was struggling with my academic grades. He would often call me by my surname and say, “Popoola, I believe in you. You are a great man.” Reflecting on this now, I will find his contact information and give a call.

Mr. Ojo was my headmaster in primary school (elementary), and although he didn’t teach me any academic subjects, he had a profound impact on my life. He nurtured my love for the arts by encouraging us to participate in music and drama. Even though I pursued a career in the sciences, music and drama have remained significant aspects of my life, including in my teaching today. It’s remarkable that I remember him more vividly than the teachers who taught me academic subjects at the time. In fact, I can still recall some of the songs he taught us, and it has been almost forty years.

Ms. Vaughn, my year 7 English teacher. Up till now, I remembered how warm and affectionate she was. She also had excellent pronunciation of the English Language and inspired me to speak eloquently. She was calm, beautiful, and always well-groomed. I find myself adorning these traits even as an adult now.
