My third grade teacher Mrs. Burden was a great influence in my life. I was having trouble with reading and the teacher the previous year said to my parents I would never be a great reader. I had heard her say that so I started third grade knowing I would not be able to overcome this problem. But Mrs. Burden took the time to help me build the skills I needed for reading, including doing some tutoring after school. Her dedication helped me develop the skills I need to read and most importantly helped me develop a love for reading. I remember how she helped me rebuild confidence that taken away. I strive to be that type of teacher who builds my students.

I have had a handful of teachers who had a great impact on my life. The one thing that they all had in common was that they seemed to genuinely care about me and my progress in school and life. Having an adult that genuinely listened tot me and encourages my processes left a lasting impression to me.

I had a college community professor who had fun reading my essays in front of the course. By doing so he encouraged me to write better because it was my first second year learning English and I needed help.

Mrs. Murphy was my fourth grade teacher. What I loved about her was that she supported us in multiple musicals, as she was a concert pianist. More than that Mrs. Murphy had deficits. In her deficits, I was able to grow. Mrs. Murphy admitted she didn’t know how to teach math and so she gave us workbooks to do on our own. I loved math, and so I did math at *my* pace, not at the course pace. I ended up advancing two grade levels in math because of that and ultimately majored in computer science and math because of her deficit. The moral of the story is – God works in our gaps!

I had an English teacher who was supportive of my faith even though he believed differently. He challenged me and gave feedback on my work that was helpful and practical. He also went to bat for me when another teacher tried to fail me. He said things in his course that I still remember and have used myself, even some of his puns.
