I went to a public school and the teacher that influenced my life was my high school art teacher. She paired with a physically handicapped student in my course to help him with his projects, she gave me extra instruction and she pushed me to fill out my college application. Neither of my parents had went to college, so without her “nagging” me to apply to finish my portfolio for admission, I would not have gotten accepted and become a college graduate. (College is also where I met my husband and I truly believe she was used to fulfill God’s plan for my life)

Mr. Jensen was my 4th grade teacher. He had positive influence on my life because of how he taught and how he invested in his students. Academically, he had a program that allowed you to earn points and you were able to write to organizations that you enjoyed. For example, I was able to write to the Detroit Lions, and the Buffalo Bills. And most of the time these organizations would respond to you. It created an enthusiasm to learn in the classroom and I will always remember the activities we did because of how he taught. Lastly, Mr. Jensen would invest in you relationally and cared about what was going on in your life. He never judged you but held everyone of his students to a high academic standard.

A teacher who had a positive influence on my life was my third grade teacher Mrs. Koonce. She was a soft and quiet soul and always spoke very sweetly to her course. I was going to be gone the day my second grade course went to meet the teacher, so Mrs. Koonce let me come early to meet her. I remember she told me was hoping I would be in her course and that made my third grade self feel so good and loved.

I had several teachers that had a positive influence on my life, but there is one that really stands out. Mrs. Beacham was my piano teacher starting at the age of 8. She made me memorize scripture and would pray with me every lesson. As I grow, I would go to her with question and concerns. She would always point me to the Bible and pray with/ for me. She loved me as a granddaughter. I loved her has a grandmother. She helped develop my love of music and my spiritual growth. She was instrumental in my life.

I had a third grade teacher that was influential in my young life. Her name was Nancy Six and she was a lovely person inside and out. She was warm and inviting. She was kind to everyone in the course and personable. She shared stories about her little children and her trip to the Grand Canyon. She bought us each a bottle of coke from the teacher vending machine at school when we passed our multiplication facts. I don’t remember any specific lesson that she taught, but I remember how much I loved going to school every day.

I did not attend a Christian school. I attended the local public elementary school in my town. She never mentioned the Bible or Jesus, but I knew that she valued people and enjoyed her job. My mother kept in contact with her through the years because one of her cousins was Mrs. Six’s neighbor. She always asked about me and still has a small basket of silk flowers that I gave her as a gift. I knew that if I were ever a teacher I would like to be one that impacted young lives in a positive way like she did.
