Elijah recognized that it was God’s will to bring Elisha on a a student. Elijah also encouraged Elisha to see Gods will in the matter to ensure Elisha had the correct motivation to take the role.

Elisha His leadership qualities were service, loyalty, confidence, nurturer, and encourager. Elisha stayed near Elijah’s side, watching how the prophet handled events that he may achieve greater miracles Elijah mentored Elisha, imparting his prophetic wisdom and anointing.

Elijah served as a mentor to Elisha, guiding and training him for leadership. This highlights the importance of mentorship in leadership development, where experienced leaders invest in and develop the next generation of leaders.

Elijah allowed Elisha to decide whether he would be obedient to the call of God. This shows that Elijah was considerate of Elisha’s thoughts and desires.

To me there was a balance of Elijah not forcing Elisha into the role and allowing him to feel the call to leadership from the Lord. On the other hand Elijah confirmed Elisha taking up the mantle. Elisha had to both walk in confidence towards the role and also had to move forward in faith. It reminds me of a relay race and the baton being handed off. Both the runner with the baton has to slow down at the same time the other runner has to match the speed of the incoming runner. The balance allows the exchange to be seamless if done properly which Elijah and Elisha’s was.
