There was a clear selection. Elisha took upon him the mantle of Elijah. He submitted fully himself and followed Elijah even when he tried to stop him. Elisha also had a teachable spirit.

Elijah was a prophet who hears from God , he knew that there is a call upon Elisha but he did not reveal it to him and Elisha also new the call of God upon his life to follow this man of God, he was ready to forfeit all his life earnings to follow this man of God and he was focused and will not allow any distraction to his heavenly calling. Even when Elijah tried to discourage him , he refused and he followed him to the end.
As leaders ,we should be prayerful and ready to hear what God is saying concerning who to recruit to the leadership.
For example, Elijah saw the willingness, interest and also , is a leader in his business which means he has an idea about leadership and he was ready to submit himself under authority, he has a teachable spirit . I believe this is what God expect us to do as leaders.
