Discuss the SoulCare concept that Christianity is not about a better life; it is about a better hope.

What I would describe as popular Christianity relies on God’s principles to make life work instead of relying on him alone. We want the spouse, the children, the house, the car, the satisfying career, and the healthy bank account. Then we will be satisfied. We use his principles to get these things and we demand them. And we accuse him and doubt him when all these boxes aren’t checked. We shake our fists at him. We settle for a satisfying life instead of being fully satisfied in Him alone. We have hope not only now but so much more in the future. An intimate relationship with Him trumps all other concerns. It trumps the good life, whatever that means. He is better than anything in his creation, including his own principles. He is the ultimate satisfaction. And I find myself increasingly wanting Him instead of anything else. Anything else leaves me dry and desperate. He is my hope.

Many Christians strive for the best possible life and not only lose sight of God, but also implement corrupt ways of reaching that goal. This best life can include an unrealistic view of people and relationships. The desires and choices can leave a person feeling empty and overwhelmed. God has a better way. James 4:8 tells us “draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” This verse also warns us not to be double-minded, which to me means focus on God not the world. I see this hope as a healthier way to live, to relate to others and reach their interior world.

These days people talk about striving for a higher standard of living, but some also recognise that a higher standard of living does not always translate into a better quality of life. Possessions and status do not bring the happiness that we mistakenly assume they would. A better life (i.e. a more comfortable, hassle free life) is not a worthwhile goal as it does not respond to our deepest craving for life in the presence of God. Yet God says we have this hope – to live and walk in the Spirit, to know God’s peace and abundance in any and every circumstance. This kind of joy surpasses any imaginable worldy pleasure.

SC is about a relationship with God not using God to have a better life

In my earlier years as a Christian I thought of God as my problem eliminator. When He didn’t show up or come through on my terms, I felt let down and rejected by Him. Now I see that He is more interested in having a relationship with me than solving my issues. This enables me to grow in adversity and sunshine, because I can always move toward Him in my present reality.
