As I have mentioned in other discussion questions, a bigger part of my sports ministry deals with crisis. I have served as a chaplain with MRO over the last 20 years. I was not a part of the crisis Billy described that happened at Charlotte Motor Speedway, but close enough to understand the severity of the trauma. I have dealt with injury and death. One major lesson that I would make sure all chaplains understand is the need for self care. When dealing with trauma, make sure you have someone to also help you through your own feelings of critical incident and crisis. I feel I can always l can always learn more to effectively minister. I feel I can continue to learn to lean on the Holy Spirit in crisis.. to be mindful of His leading and understanding.. but to also lean on the crisis training that I believe Billy will cover in other sessions.

I, being a Retired R.N. feel that I am equipped to deal with someone with a Crisis;at least in dealing with Physical injuries; illnesses and/or issues. I feel that it is to my advantage that I try to keep myself abreast of like the NEW Recommendations around C.P.R./First Aid and Emergency Response to the best Of my abilities. One area where I believe I need more experience/practice is in rendering Mental Health First Aid/Peer Support to someone whom quickly approaches me for help; and places me at a disadvantage to quickly remember to carry out the principles/practices of A.L.G.E.E. as taught in Mental Health First Aid. I sometimes have to combat the desire to ‘fix’ the victims/athletes/ care-receivers problems/issues and allow them to verbally ventilate; hopefully towards Issue resolution on their own. A Group facilitator has instructed me that this calls a Helper out to be one whom demonstrates ‘Heart’ ( Compassion) with ears; and not one whom needs to necessarily always be verbal.
