I think it is extremely important for young children to know scripture. They must have it rooted in their minds and hearts so that when they come up against situations or temptations, they are able to stay grounded in their faith.

Yes, it is important for young children to know Scripture for several reasons:

    1. Spiritual Foundation: Introducing children to Scripture at a young age helps establish a foundation of faith and spiritual understanding. They begin to learn about God, Jesus Christ, and important moral and ethical principles taught in the Bible.

    2. Moral and Ethical Guidance: Scripture provides moral and ethical guidance that can shape children’s behavior and character development. Teaching them biblical values such as love, kindness, honesty, and forgiveness helps them understand how to interact with others and navigate life’s challenges.

    3. Cultural Literacy: Understanding Scripture is essential for cultural literacy, as many references in literature, art, music, and even everyday language stem from biblical stories and concepts. Familiarity with Scripture allows children to better comprehend and appreciate various cultural expressions and references.

    4. Sense of Identity and Belonging: For children raised in Christian families or communities, knowledge of Scripture fosters a sense of identity and belonging within their faith tradition. It connects them to their religious heritage and helps them understand their place within the broader Christian community.

    5. Spiritual Growth: Engaging with Scripture fosters spiritual growth and deepens children’s relationship with God. As they learn about God’s love, grace, and promises through biblical stories and teachings, they develop a personal faith that can sustain them throughout their lives.

    6. Critical Thinking and Discernment: Studying Scripture encourages critical thinking and discernment skills as children grapple with complex theological concepts and moral dilemmas presented in the Bible. It encourages them to ask questions, seek understanding, and apply biblical principles to real-life situations.

. Every year we have a school wide verse that is 14-15 verses long. We as teachers are to encourage the children to memorize the school wide verse. The younger they are the easier teaching the children the verses and memorizing so that they are able to repeat scripture back. I taught Pre-K for two years and both years my four/five year old’s could quote to long school wide verse. Yes, I was the only preschool class that taught the children the scripture and many of the Lower elementary and High school did not quote it. Overall, teaching young children Scripture provides them with a strong foundation for spiritual, moral, and intellectual growth, equipping them to navigate the complexities of life with faith, wisdom, and integrity

Yes I think the childhood foundation leads into adulthood. It is also easier for children to absorb information than adults or teens. The foundation based in childhood can be the foundation that they need later in life.

Yes, they have such an enormous capacity for language and memorization–so they can hide the truths in their hearts, be strongly rooted and grow from a strong foundation.

I think it is really important for young children to know scripture. We start with teaching our pre-school course small passages to learn.
