We are told to meditate on God’s word day in night, write it on our forehead and doorpost, and quote it when we wake and when we lie down. It is very important for everyone, including children to know Scripture. We tend to give children a “way out” because they’re young and they may not understand or we don’t think they’re capable of knowing that much Scripture, but my students are constantly quoting movies, memes, and tik toks. I know that if they surrounded themselves (or parents and teachers surrounded them) with Scripture as much as they do social media and video games, they would understand and memorize much more than we expect them to now. How can we expect children to respond to situations in a Christ-like manner if we’re not expecting them to know and study Scripture.

It is very important for young children to know Scripture. It is easier for young children to memorize and internalize Scripture. It is a part of training a child up in the way they should go so they will not depart from it.

Yes, young children can and should know scripture. They can memorize entire Disney movie dialogue and songs. They can memorize and know over 900 pokemon characters and their powers and points. What will this profit their soul? Is there anything wrong with cartoon characters and games? No, but if they would be exposed and taught the awesome characters of the Bible and memorize scripture and the Psalms of the Bible, then in the quiet moments, when their little minds wander, in the moments of doubt, fear, joy, excitement, the Word could minister to their soul.
