Doug Groothuis stated, “Our culture is very interested in life after death. You think of the interest in near-death experiences, in attempting to communicate with spirit guides or higher beings, or I think some of the interest in extraterrestrial life is really rooted in a desire to transcend the limitations of this life.” Do you agree with Doug Groothuis’ statement? Why or why not? Can you think of other theories that speak to the human need to survive death? What are they? Why are those views held? - Discussion Forum - Artos Academy (BETA)

Yes, I agree. Everyone is afraid because we cannot escape our death on this planet and so we want to know where we will be going. And if Christ is not at the center of your life, you will look for other ways to find answers and still you are unsatisfied after seeing those. I have seen some people say there os nothing, we just go unconsious and that is it. Seems like they are trying to conquer their fear, when they, if they faollwed Christ, could have it all

I think when people don’t have a solid foundation to base their thoughts on life after death, they grasp at anything they can.

I agree with his statement because it seems we humans are always searching for meaning in our lives, and we all seem to have an innate fear of death, of ceasing to exist and a will to continue an existing. Reincarnation, cryogenix, mummification and ancestral spirit worship are other theories that speak to the human need and desire to cheat death. I believe these views are held for the same reason all life beyond death views or held, our desire to exist for all eternity.

I agree with Groothuis’s statement, suggesting that people are interested in life after death or extraterrestrial life because they have a desire to transcend the limits of this life. I agree with this because this is one of the places I’ve observed non-believers turn when they are trying to process the meaning of life. Specifically, I’m thinking about the idea of reincarnation. It’s okay to die, because we will all come back again as something else and live infinite lives.
Through my faith in Jesus Christ, I do not believe in reincarnation or other theories, but it is something I’ve observed.

I do ageree with Mr. Groothuis. People are interested in life after death because we want to know that this was all worth it and there has to be more. I believe in God’s word when he says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” John 14:1-4.
With that I am comforted and will see my loved ones who has gone before me. We should all take comfort in His words!
