If we adopt this vision goal as stated we will understand that we can’t fix the problem but if we can get their appetite for God and expiernce him is the way of helping those who are the recipients of soul care

Knowing this, really knowing this, would have me bringing God into the situation from the first moment. The knowledge that I can do nothing to affect change in this person’s life, but that by the leading of the Holy Spirit and the work that only He can do to make changes in us that are deeper than the symptoms we see on the outside; that He alone can draw a person to HIm and counsel and teach him; and that a life lived yielded to Him would have us living above the problems in our lives would cause me to focus on helping them relinquish their fear and their grip on their ‘reality’ so that God can show them how things really are.

    Dr Crabb,
I’m a 66 years old retired blue collar worker who barely got thru school decades ago. In God’s humor he has me back at Our Daily Bread University and you are my first course (so sorry). 3 years ago God called my wife and I to lead a bible study at Cook County Jail one of the largest jails in country. We have asked for the toughest tiers in the jail. We love our ministry. In September CCJ made me a volunteer chaplain to go talk to detainees one on one. I have no formal training other than my walk with the Lord for 40 years. I tell you al this to give you at little context to my answer to your question.

By all outward appearances this is a recipe for disaster, with no chance of success but I am amazed that God shows all the time. There is no question in my mind I am out of league. The blessing of your course is it has giving me some tools to help me figure out what is going on inside of me when they talk. So I know now I won’t give up but is there a way that I can hon my skills and still leave it all in the hands of our Lord? That is want I am trying to do in course. I have no big plans to advance my career (that is in the books) but if I can help just one man with a little SoulCare then my work won’t be in vain.

    Blessings
    Kurt Olson

PS John Smith from Our Daily Bread has come out to visit the men Cook County Jail. He was the one that got me on this track with the University.

The pressure is off!!!. Knowing that my part is to introduce the person to the one with all the answers, relieves me of such feelings as being inadequate or being fearful. I can really listen to the person’s unspoken words as well as what they are actually sharing and ask Giod how I can be an instrument to bring that individual into a closer relationship with Him.
