I read somewhere that the idea of prayer is to simply say, “Me too.” It means to identify as having the same need as the person you are praying with and for. Soul care, by Dr. Crabb’s explanation, sounds like having the same posture of needing God’s power, intervention, and grace as the person I may want to help. It means acknowledging my own lack and God as the only source of power. It means understanding that engaging in soul care as God designed it will change both souls in the process. So, in essence, it’s turning both chairs toward each other and both faces toward God.

I believe that effective SoulCare comes from following God’s Spirit, not your own will. How do you know what he wants, happens by prayer to Him in guiding you to guide the person that needs someone to go along “the journey” with them.

Understanding that I am not the one providing answers to the person with the concern. I am the instrument use by God to travel alongside the person during the journey, guiding them to develop a stronger seek for the presence (relationship) with God than the desire to solve a concern superficially.

My understanding from Dr. Crabb’s lecture is that SoulCare is not about me fixing a person, helping or finding a solution to their problem rather it’s about God using me to care for a person’s soul. I will approach SoulCare knowing I have to depend upon God to lead me, not on my skills as a counselor. SoalCare is a deep desire to see persons mature in their faith. It’s not about me and how good a counselor I am but about me surrendering to God to be empowered and used to facilitate His work in a person’s life.

Understanding Dr. Crabb’s vision has fundamentally shaped my anticipation of practicing SoulCare. It’s liberating to approach this journey knowing I don’t have to lean solely on my own abilities or knowledge. The idea that I won’t have to recall perfect techniques or find the exact words brings immense relief. Instead, I’m comforted by the belief that the Holy Spirit will guide me, providing what’s needed in each situation. This new approach frees me from the pressures of perfectionism and self-reliance, opening a path where my role is more about being a receptive vessel for divine guidance.
