Bible study is a faith practice among peers, centering around one text and its teachings. Fellowship is the collected acts of a faith community that follow the teachings of Jesus and God. Prayer is a collective or individual intent to ask for what is wanted, for oneself or for others. Each of these communicates to a different aspect of spirituality: togetherness, study, and communing with God and Jesus. Faith needs a balance of these practices to grow and thrive.

Through Bible study, we can see and hear God communicating to us through His Word. The Bible tells us of God’s character, our fallen state as sinful human beings, and His redemptive plan for the world that is accomplished through Jesus. In prayer, we can talk with God, cast our anxieties and burdens before him, and align our hearts to His will. Prayer helps us to center our focus on God and bring our needs before Him. Fellowship helps us communicate with God because God often chooses to reinforce the truth of His Word through the encouragement and accountability of other people.

All the types of communication are useful and necessary to form the spiritual communication process. Bible reading is the easiest for me. Prayer comes second. I’m good at teaching and communicating with fellow believers but I need more tools and knowledge to speak to non believers.

Bible study is reading and learning more about God’s word whether in a group or alone. Fellowship is spending time with other believers. Prayer is communication with God.
