God can speak to us when we read the Bible, when we pray, and through other people when we fellowship with them. Also God may speak through us to encourage someone else.

Bible study, fellowship, and prayer can be called different forms of spiritual communication because it is when and where we immerse and expose ourselves to the words of God; through Bible reading God communicates with us, through prayer we communicate to God, and we both do it through fellowship.

In a simplistic way, we may say that Bible reading and/or study is letting God talk to us through His written word; prayer is we talking to God about our needs, admiration, etc.; and fellowship is we talking to fellow believers in the presence/hearing of God. In this sense, they are like different modes of communication. Yet they all help to build our Christian life (what we call spiritual formation), and they are in practice intertwined and not mutually exclusive.

I think bible study is either by our self or with others, structured or not, is sharing our interpretation of God’s word. The ultimate goal is to know God’s truth and live it out in our lives. For fellowship, it is an avenue of showing love and care for one another, to support one another in this journey of faith. As for prayer, it is our communication with God, either for our own needs or the needs of others. Thus all these are in one way or another way, a biblical communication to help us grow in Christ.

Prayer, bible study, and fellowship are different aspects in the Christian’s walk that is needed in process of maturing in their faith. They are different in that the each engage in different forms of communication. Bible study is where God talks to us. His truth is presented in His Word and we read it to better know His character. Prayer is our way of communicating with God. This is the way that we acknowledge our dependence on God and praise Him for who He is and what He has done. Fellowship is needed help “provoke one another to good works” (Heb. 10:24) and hold each other accountable under God’s authority.
